Red States Are Preparing To Passively And Actively Resist New Federal Gun Laws, While Blue States Are Enacting And Defending Restrictions On Gun Rights
In the solid red states, there has been a surge in pro-gun rights laws. There are now 20 states that do not (or shortly will not) require a license to carry a concealed firearm. These are the green states is the graphic at left. The common term for this says it all: Constitutional Carry. These states are on record in support of the personal right to keep and bear arms. Additionally, the number of 2nd Amendment Sanctuary states is also surging - with the vast majority being much more than symbolic.
These resolutions usually prohibit state and local officials from assisting federal agents in enforcing any federal gun law not mirrored in state law. The means that state and local law enforcement cannot allow persons arrested for these “crimes” to be booked into local jails or participate in “task forces”. Without such support, enforcing such laws would be virtually impossible.
Some states are preparing to go even further. In South Carolina, a bill would make everyone legally able to own firearms a member of the state’s “unorganized militia” and authorize them to own weapons that the federal government is considering prohibiting. In other states, the bills assert that only the state can regulate firearms within its’ borders and/or direct state officials to actively protect the rights of residents.
In the blue states, enforcement of highly questionable laws continues and even more laws are being proposed – up to and including confiscation. Legal battles continue over magazine capacity, the right to carry, and so called “Assault Weapons” bans. As this is written, the Supreme Court is deciding if it should hear a case challenging New York State’s highly restrictive carry laws. When a New York gun rights case was previously before the high court, five Democratic Senators, including Sen. Schumer, the majority leader, threatened to expand and pack the court unless SCOTUS ruled as they wished – and that was exactly what happened.
In Congress, the Senate is considering two highly deceptive “background check” bills, passed by the House, that would criminalize the mere handing of a firearm to another person without a background check and also allow the government to delay firearms sales for up to a month without even giving a reason for doing so. This bill would also create a registry of gun owners by allowing the FBI to keep records of approved purchases forever.
In short, the battle over gun rights is more heated and more dangerous than it has even been. If this nation is going to experience another disastrous civil war, gun laws will likely be the flash point.
